Make it British Visits Seal International

Last month, we were pleased to welcome Kate Hills, founder of Make it British, to Ladywell Mills, Bradford as part of her ongoing mission to visit 100 UK manufacturers.
During her visit, Kate toured Seal International to gain a closer insight into the specialist fibre sourcing and processing that sits at the very beginning of textile manufacturing.

Beginning at the Start of the Supply Chain

The visit offered a rare look into one of the most specialist and often unseen stages of textile production. With deep roots in the British textile industry, Seal International plays a fundamental role in preparing raw fibres for the next stages of manufacture, transforming them into high-quality, process-ready materials.
Throughout the tour, Kate was introduced to the precision involved in handling an extensive range of natural fibres, from cashmere, mohair, and alpaca through to rarer fibres such as vicuña, sable, and mink. She followed the journey of fibre as it moves through sorting, grading, blending, carding, fibre opening, and preparation into combed tops and sliver.
Although much of this work takes place long before fabric reaches the loom, these early stages have a significant impact on the final quality, consistency, and performance of the cloth. Fibre selection, handling, and preparation all require a high level of technical understanding, supported by decades of specialist processing knowledge.

Precision, Provenance, and Supply Chain Integrity

The conversation during the visit also reflected the increasing importance of transparency within textile supply chains. Fibre provenance is now a key consideration across the industry, with greater demand for clarity on origin, handling, and processing standards.
Seal International works closely with growers, merchants, and manufacturing partners to support a clear and accountable route from raw fibre through to finished material. Alongside this, rigorous quality control and in-house expertise ensure fibres are consistently prepared to meet the requirements of spinning and weaving partners.
In an increasingly globalised market, this level of traceability and technical assurance remains central to maintaining confidence in both material integrity and performance.

Preserving Specialist Knowledge in British Textiles

Fibre preparation is one of the most technically demanding yet least visible areas of textile manufacturing. It is also one where long-established expertise continues to play a defining role.
In Yorkshire, where textile manufacturing heritage runs deep, this knowledge forms part of a wider industrial legacy that still actively shapes production today. Seal International remains part of that continuum, maintaining specialist capability within the UK and supporting the wider ecosystem of British textile manufacturing.

Kate’s visit highlighted the value of this early-stage expertise and the importance of sustaining it within the UK. We were pleased to welcome her to Seal International and to share insight into the craft, precision, and knowledge that underpin the very beginning of the textile journey.
